Snake River - WA. The terrain turned from heavily-wooded forests to dry and barren country. Their guides, Twisted Hair and Tetoharsky, went ahead of the party to assure other Indians that Lewis and Clark were friendly. Many of the chiefs wanted to meet the white men, but Lewis wanted to get to the Pacific as fast as possible. He politely declined their invitations with a promise to stay awhile on their return trip.
